What Are Your Sex-pectations?
A couple of recent blog posts discussed the balance of sex scenes in a romance story. What makes a story a sex-fest? How do you measure a romance as sweet? At what stage in a romance should the main characters get down with their jollies – or should they ever do it “on screen” at all?
Of course, there are many viewpoints all jumbled up in there. Readers always have their own personal taste, whether they like erotic, explicit or purely empathetic. Sometimes it depends on our opinions, our comfort levels, or just the mood we’re in. And of course authors are allowed to write a variety of sensual situations in their career! A story is an adventure, a journey, and its characters take their own unique route to happy ever after – or equivalent – each time. To me, that’s what it’s about. To each story, the right level of sensuality.
Sweet Summer Sweat sets out to depict a sexual adventure for two inexperienced and impressionable young men on the quest for freedom and escape from their boring lives. They get plenty of stimulation at Maxwell’s Motel – but at the end of the day, they individually choose how much they want and feel satisfied with. And it’s not necessarily the same for both of them.
I like writing sexy men and sexy scenes. But not always! Sensuality is often far more important – suspense and anticipation and flirtation and banter, all have their part to play in the joy of a good romance. Sweet Summer Sweat is full of intimacy, but it also has mystery, mayhem and a little creepiness. The men are sexy, but also flawed and conflicted, demonstrating – or seeking – maturity of completely different kinds. I hope it’s a reflection of the variety and adventure we find in human nature itself.
Let me know what you think – do you read sexy or sweet? Or a happy mixture of both?

Blurb: When you find a place where lust and sex rule life, and your every desire can be fulfilled, why would you ever want to leave?
Young runaway Scot and his boyfriend Jerry escape their deadbeat homes and families, hoping to leave prejudice behind them and travel to a new life in Las Vegas. Unprepared and naive, they’re lost almost at once, and shelter at a run-down, deserted motel in the middle of the scorching hot Nevada desert. A place with secrets, run by staff both gorgeous and uninhibited, and driven by a mysterious sexual connection Scotís never even dared to dream.
All but drugged by the lazy heat and the hedonism around him, Scot watches as Jerry is seduced away and realizes their relationship was nothing more than shared lust. Restless, Scot knows he wants true love and real understanding. Could he find it with the mysterious and elusive owner of the motel, Connor Maxwell? Connor seems to think so, every time he appears and pursues Scot for his own. But where does Connor come from? It seems the passion calls him into being at its own whim.
Eventually, what binds Connor and his friends to the motel may be too strong for Scot to break through. Scot has ambitions to travel, to make something of his life ñ but is his only option to embrace life at the motel in his true loverís arms?
Or will that love be strong enough to release them both…
About the Author
Clare London took her pen name from the city where she lives, loves, and writes. A lone, brave female in a frenetic, testosterone-fuelled family home, she juggles her writing with her other day job as an accountant.
Sheís written in many genres and across many settings, with award-winning novels and short stories published both online and in print. She says she likes variety in her writing while friends say sheís just fickle, but as long as both theories spawn good fiction, sheís happy. Most of her work features male/male romance and drama with a healthy serving of physical passion, as she enjoys both reading and writing about strong, sympathetic, and sexy characters.
Clare currently has several novels sulking at that tricky chapter three stage and plenty of other projects in mind… she just has to find out where she left them in that frenetic, testosterone-fuelled family home.
