Blurb: Tracy Brandt considers himself a lucky man. He has a wonderful family, good friends, and a dependable job. His love life, however, features a cheating ex who, though out of the house, is not yet out of the picture—with a past that just might get Tracy killed.
Homicide inspector Cord Nolan wants nothing more than to show his best friend’s little brother that he’s a reliable man, but to do that he’ll have to get Tracy to look past the player he used to be. It’ll be a tough sell; reputation is everything, and Cord’s is tarnished by his past indiscretions.
Tracy and Cord have spent five years trying to suffocate their fiery attraction under a blanket of grudging antagonism. When Tracy finds himself with a target on his back, Cord finally has the chance to ride to the rescue and break through the dam of Tracy’s reserve. But he’d better be careful: if Cord is breaking the floodgates to wash away the past, he’s going to have to hold tight to Tracy to make sure they’re still standing when the tumult recedes.
Review: So, here we are with a brand new Mary Calmes book to read. I believe that every reader out there has those few authors who are auto-buys for them. Well, Ms. Calmes is definitely that for me. Whether it is Sam and Jory, Stefan and Rand, Jin and Logan, or her hyena shifters, I am always ready for a new book. Her smooth writing style and mastery of dialogue simply grab hold of my attention and hold on to it until the very last word of the story. This new book is no different.
In Floodgates, we are introduced to a whole new set of characters. For awhile now we have been settled in comfortably with our favorite characters, and I know I have loved it. Then along come Tracy Brandt and his own caravan of crazy. Tracy brings along his (maybe) ex-boyfriend Breckin, his friend and business partner Dimah, his brother Evan, the actor, his other brother Alex, the DEA agent, and Alex’s former work partner Cord Nolan, the police officer.
This book starts out with a bang (literally) and by the end of chapter three, it is obvious that Tracy is going on a wild ride. After catching Breckin in a VERY compromising position months ago, Tracy is finally starting to get his life back to normal. Well, if normal is almost getting shot up at work. Breckin is pushing hard for reconciliation, and Tracy is wavering. The more confusing part is the change in Cord. See, Cord has always been the smexing and leaving type. Tracy knows this and for that very reason, he has buried any attraction he has to the man for years. Now up is down, left is right, and the world has spun off its axis because Cord is being… nice. He starts out being protective, but ends up comforting Tracy after delivering some very upsetting news.
When Tracy and his family realize that his life is in danger, and that he isn’t the only one, they set plans in motion to catch the bad guy. Cord is Tracy’s self appointed bodyguard for the duration of the case, and along the way, Tracy has his eyes opened to some hurtful truths, realizes that fantasies really can come true, and finds a happiness that he has only ever dreamed about.
I cannot say enough good things about this book and the fabulous cast of characters. One of Ms. Calmes’s talents is seamlessly melding romance with mystery, and she does it wonderfully in this book. Between the start of the story and the climactic ending, there are some very emotional scenes, some healing, and some very hot smexing. I highly recommend this book and I hope you love it as much as I did.
