Mj’s Five Favorite Performance Pieces

Hi, this is MJ O’Shea and well… I love music. A lot. And before I was a writer, before I was a teacher, I was a huge music geek. I never did it as a professional pursuit, but it’s shaped my life more than just about anything.

I thought instead of doing my usual where I talk about the music I used to write my newest book Marriage of Inconvenience, I’d do a little bit of my own musical history. Here are links to a few of my favorite things I ever performed in various bands symphonies etc etc. I’ll try to keep it to shorter pieces lol, no 1812 or Rhapsody in Blue. Nobody wants to be sitting here for a half an hour.

So in no particular order (except the final one)….

Irish Tune From County Derry (Danny Boy) – I played flute on this one. This song is a surefire way to get the audience choked up. I love Danny Boy anyway, but this arrangement is incredible <3

Lincolnshire Posey, Lisbon or Lisbon Bay (I’ve seen it called both) – We played this during my brief stint on the bassoon. I don’t remember how to play that instrument at all haha. I love how kooky and fun this one is but all of Lincolnshire Posey is fantastic.

Beethoven Sonata Pathetique 2nd movement – Piano solo obviously J This was one of my last solo performances before I went off to college.

George Winston Joy – I did play this, but even more than that, my mom and I always listened to this album when we decorated the house for the holidays so It always reminds me of Christmas.

Lord of the Rings Symphony – Hobbits – This one’s a bit longer, but I couldn’t leave it off. This was absolutely my favorite thing to perform and we did it quite a few times so I’ve played it on flute and pianoJ It’s the end of the entire Lord of the rings symphony (which has nothing to do with the film score) and the whole thing is incredible.

That’s it or else I’ll end up going on and on forever …

I’ve left my blurb and social media links down below if you want to talk music, books, or anything else! Thanks for having me stop by <3

xoxo
