The Austen Influence

While I was writing The ‘True Love’ Solution, I was also editing the Manifold Press anthology A Certain Persuasion, which features LGBTQ+ fiction inspired by Jane Austen’s novels. As may be exceedingly evident by now, I am a total fangirl about Austen – and working so closely with her novels and other writings over the past couple of years has only deepened my allegiance!

One of the common themes that Austen worked with was that her main character often needs to choose wisely between two very different men. Elizabeth Bennet is interested at various times in both Wickham and Darcy. Fanny Price’s story involves both Henry Crawford and Edmund Bertram, while Edmund himself must choose between Mary Crawford and Fanny. Marianne Dashwood has both Willoughby and Colonel Brandon – and if the reader didn’t know that Elinor Dashwood already loved Edward Ferrars, there is a time in that story where one feels Mrs Jennings wasn’t entirely wrong to consider Elinor and Brandon a good match.

While I very rarely write stories that involve a Main Character having more than one Romantic Interest, I thought I might follow Austen’s example and give it a try. Hence The ‘True Love’ Solution!

As indicated by the title, the main character Jules Madigan needs to work out what the ideal solution will be to his quest for True Love. On one hand, we have him meeting and sparking an interest in Ewan Byge, Jules’ favourite romance author. Surely an author of romances knows how to create a happy ending in real life…? On the other hand, we have Police Constable Leonard Edgar. He is quiet and diligent, certainly not as exciting as Ewan – but also thoughtful and kind.

As with Austen’s Romantic Interests, I wanted both choices to be attractive and plausible – and even if the reader can guess all along which character is the better choice, I wanted Jules himself to really feel the dilemma of the situation.

Whether I succeeded or not, dear Reader, I leave you to be the judge!

About the Book

true-loveJules Madigan loves his family and he loves his job. The only thing he’s missing out on is a Happy Ever After, like the ones written by his favourite romance author Ewan Byge. While he’s waiting for that HEA, Jules indulges himself in buying Ewan’s old typewriter as memorabilia – before realising he’s been defrauded. Through the fraud case, he makes friends with Police Constable Leonard Edgar – and through Leonard, Jules even gets to meet and work with Ewan Byge Himself! But the course of True Love never did run smooth, and soon Jules has to face some harsh realities.
