We’re so pleased to kick off a new week with author Quinn Anderson and the tour for her latest release, The Other Five Percent. She’s sharing some background info on the book’s setting with us, and there’s also a great giveaway, so be sure to check out the entry details below.
The Other Five Percent‘s Unusual Setting
I mentioned earlier in my blog tour that I picked the setting for my book—Brigantine, New Jersey—by going on Google Maps and selecting a random town. That’s true, but there’s a bit more to it than that. I’d never heard of Brigantine, New Jersey before choosing it as my setting. Initially, I toyed with Atlantic City, which is spitting distance from it, and some other neighboring towns, but as soon as I googled Brigantine, I knew it was the perfect place. I might have to visit it someday, because it truly inspired me!
It’s a small island town that has one bridge leading in and out of it. I’ve always been fascinated by bridges and islands, so right away I was romanced by it. I’d also just finished writing a book for the Murmur Inc. series, which is set in Los Angeles, so I was ready to leave big cities behind for a bit and write something set in a small town.
Brigantine has a ton of cool features, in addition to the bridge I mentioned before. There’s a lighthouse that was, funny enough, built in such a way that it can’t function as one. Instead, it serves as the headquarters for the local police. There’s a gift shop and a little museum inside as well!
The small-town setting allowed me to play around with creating some mom-and-pop stores with punny names (I’m a sucker for puns). I had a lot of fun with that, especially juxtaposing them with places like Starbucks, which even small towns can’t get away from.
Honestly, as I was writing, I was surprised by how much the setting influenced the narrative. I wouldn’t say it altered any major plot points, but it affected the tone, what the characters wore, the locations, and even my characters’ childhoods. If you’re into taking the scenic route, you’re sure to love it!
Thanks so much for reading, and remember to leave a comment for your chance to win!
About the Book
Logan Vanderveer has a joke he’s been telling since college: he’s ninety-five percent straight. He did some experimenting in school, but none of the men he fooled around with inspired him to abandon “the plan”: meet a nice girl, get married, and settle down, just like his parents always said.
None of them except Ellis Floyd, who aroused desires and feelings that scared Logan. So much so that he abandoned their burgeoning relationship just as it might have become something. But four years later, Ellis is back, and Logan finds himself questioning his sexuality in a big way.
Ellis doesn’t fit into Logan’s plan. He’s happy being a starving artist, whereas Logan has sold his soul to corporate America. Ellis is ripped jeans, and Logan is tailored suits. And, most notably, Ellis is out. But seeing him again is dredging up memories—like how it feels to kiss Ellis, and that time they almost went all the way. With chemistry like theirs, Logan isn’t sure he can—or should—keep ignoring the other five percent.
