The Cost of True Love

As a very observant person pointed out, the heroes of my newest Demonica book, Base Instincts, embark on a dangerous journey on their way to true love. They face violence, betrayal, and even death to be with each other. It made me think…do all relationships require sacrifice?

I know that in my own relationship with my husband, we both made sacrifices in order to be together. When we met, I had a great job with the National Weather Service, and he was serving in the U.S. Coast Guard. Marrying him meant that we would be moving every 1-3 years and that my career would, basically, be over.

For his part, he knew that for much of our marriage, he’d be gone and I’d be left alone at home while he was out to sea. Then there are all of the family issues involved in a relationship – what if your parents and/or siblings don’t approve of your partner? What if you have to sacrifice the relationship with your family in order to be with the partner you love?

Now, granted, relationships in fiction can come with much more dramatic and dangerous risks. In Base Instincts, our medic hero, Raze, is forced to make a painful choice in order to be with the male he loves, and Slake, our other hero, must risk his very life and soul.

So here’s to love and the costs involved. May every sacrifice be worthwhile!
