Hi. This is Caitlin Ricci, here to talk about my new novel, About Last Night, which is with Dreamspinner Press. This is the second book in the Thornwood series but they can be read in any order.
I’d like to talk about mothers with you today. One of the wonderful things about writing is that I get to build relationships as I want them to be and for About Last Night I wanted Thomas to have his ideal family. He and his parents are extremely close. His mom is really one of his best friends and as I was writing the scenes where they’re together I wished that my family was like that.
Sometimes, as authors, we go back to what we know. For me that would be a single mom, me as an only child, and a military kind of life where we moved every few years and I was fairly isolated growing up. It worked for me and looking back now I can see the benefits that I got living that way, but I wanted Thomas to have something more. He needed a strong foundation and a family system that kept him grounded and that he could run to when he was having problems. Which he does with Rem quite often. It’s not easy being in love with someone you can’t have for whatever reason. And for Thomas it’s even worse because it’s not only that he can’t have Rem, but that he has to see Rem happy with someone else.
Thomas needed someone he could turn to and rely on. Someone who would give him honesty when he needed it, and a hug when he needed that more. And I gave him his mother. I like writing moms because the traditional mom type can vary so much. I love protective moms and caring moms and ones who love their children no matter what. To me a mom should be someone who will always be there for their kid, who loves them unconditionally, and who would take a bat to anyone who dared hurt them. I didn’t have that kind of mom so when I write moms, and I want them to be the good people in a story, I write the moms I would have wanted growing up when I needed mine the most.
Thank you for spending time with me today. What is your ideal mom like?
About the Book
Title: About Last Night
Series: Thornwood: Book Two
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Category: Contemporary Romance
Blurb: Before jumping into his first semester of college, Thomas Maloney decides to lose his virginity at a party to a stranger he’s sure he’ll never see again. Only the next day, he’s surprised to learn the same one-night stand will be sharing his dorm room. Thomas considers himself lucky, but his new roommate—not so much.
Closeted as they come, football jock Remington “Rem” Daniels is on track for a shot at the pros. Rem tries to play it cool and avoid falling for the confidently gay Thomas, which could hurt his chances. Dealing with their constant need to get in bed together wouldn’t be so hard if Rem didn’t have a girlfriend and Thomas didn’t have a conscience.
When she delivers news that will change Rem’s life forever, Thomas knows it’s time to move back home to Thornwood, Colorado. But neither the distance nor knowing Rem belongs to someone else helps Thomas get over him. Rem’s feelings haven’t changed either. When it comes down to love or football, Rem will have to make the hardest choice of his life and hope Thomas will still be waiting for him when he does.
About the Author
Caitlin was fortunate growing up to be surrounded by family and teachers that encouraged her love of reading. She has always been a voracious reader and that love of the written word easily morphed into a passion for writing. She comes from a military family and the men and women of the armed forces are close to her heart. She also enjoys gardening and horseback riding in the Colorado Rockies where she calls home with her wonderful husband and their two dogs. Her belief that there is no one true path to happily ever after runs deeply through all of her stories.
