The Excerpt

The entire ride back to Ocean Vista, River talked about money from the bicycle helmet company and some list of charities he had. He kept saying over and over that he had to make the right choice. Morgan could see how drunk River was. He rarely talked so much, and never in such a confiding manner. River didn’t share. He kept his heart guarded like a vault. Morgan only had to look at him to feel his own heart break.

By the time they reached Summit Court, River had fallen asleep. Morgan shook him awake, paid the fare for the ride, and helped River inside. He walked him upstairs, with River teetering a few times like he might fall backward. Morgan got him to the top of the stairs and to the bathroom.

“Brush your teeth and then go to bed. You’re wasted, my friend.”

“’S hot in here.” River ripped off his bow tie and tuxedo jacket and shirt before Morgan could do so much as blink. He leaned over the sink and splashed water on his face. Droplets of it went down River’s neck and chest. He didn’t bother to towel off, just grabbed a toothbrush and toothpaste.

“Some wedding, huh? It was really nice.”

River spat toothpaste in the sink and held the paste out to Morgan.

Morgan moved around him to get his own toothbrush. Tonight the bathroom felt cramped, and River’s body was large and strong next to him as Morgan brushed his teeth.

“Gotta take a leak,” River mumbled as he undid his pants. Morgan hurried out. Once he got to the safety of his bedroom, Morgan closed his door. He sagged against it and exhaled. He was slightly buzzed himself, and a drunk, naked River might have been more than Morgan could handle.

He jumped when there was a loud rap at his door.

“Yes?” Morgan’s voice was low.

“You have any Advil by chance?”

“I think so.” Morgan counted to three, prayed River was dressed, and opened his door.

No such luck. River stood there, his arms pressed on the doorway, a smile on his face, buck naked.
