Happy Five Year Anniversary!
Congratulations to Lisa and her team at The Novel Approach.
Thank goodness for book lovers like Lisa Horan. She makes the daily updates to The Novel Approach look easy and effortless – I am quite certain it is not. Much like writing a book, I’m sure operating The Novel Approach is an arduous task. Bravo, Lisa! Well done!
My debut novel, A Faithful Son, was released several months ago. Soon after its publication, I quickly learned that Lisa and others like her, play a significant supporting role for writers like myself. They give us a platform to discuss our process and shamelessly promote our works.
I have also come to understand that the writing, publishing and promotion of a novel is not for the faint of heart. For authors, it requires endless hours of writing and rewriting, followed by editing and re-editing and then along comes the marketing and promotional phase. This process includes large doses of self doubt, frustration and angst.
We writers open ourselves up to readers’ judgement and reviewers harsh critiques. We rely on their input and criticism. Whether we are gifted with a favorable review or a stiletto stabbed deep between the shoulder blades, it is the risk we are willing to take. Currently, I am hard at work on my next novel, Aunt Sookie & Me. God willing, it will be released in early Spring 2017. You can bet that Lisa Horan will be receiving an advanced copy for her own comprehensive review. I am grateful to have Lisa’s input – unless, of course, she writes a critical review – in that case, I will “unfriend” her immediately. Seriously, having avenues like The Novel Approach, other book bloggers and literary podcasts seem to be the few life-lines available for authors to find a chair at the publishing table.
Author Tom Robbins wrote that he hopes he had given his readers precious rubies, sapphires and diamonds within the pages of his novel, Still Life with Woodpecker. I understand his sentiments. I think all of us writers worry that we are only leaving our readers with mere rhinestones and cheap cut glass. It takes years of patience and committment to polish up our words into something dazzling. It’s not an easy task. But having the support of fellow writers, book blogs and literary podcasts have been essential to my brief entry into this crazy world of publishing. Their support keeps me mining for the right words. As this year closes, I’d like to extend to them a sincere thank you.
Congratulations to Lisa & her team for a job well done. I pledge to work harder in 2017 to leave behind a multi-faceted, polished pure diamond – not a dull, flat cubic zirconia.
Happy New Year!!

About A Faithful Son
This captivating coming of age tale chronicles the life of Zach Nance, a young man struggling to find his place in an ever-shifting world and the zany cast of local characters who help him come to an understanding of himself and the secret he harbors.
The small town of Durango, Colorado provides the rural backdrop for Garvin’s masterful novel. A hunky traveling carnie, an eccentric gaggle of pious church spinsters, a flirty drag queen and Jesus Christ, himself, all make appearances within the pages of this endearing novel.
After tragedy befalls the Nance’s, Zach’s close-knit family unravels. He vows to protect his beloved mother and sister from the fallout of his troubled father’s choices — forcing young Zach to redefine his loyalties, his faith and his own destiny.
A beautiful and heartrending tale in the grand tradition of To Kill A Mockingbird and The Help.
A Faithful Son captures life’s bittersweet journey through lost innocence, sacrifice, and self-discovery, treating readers to a compassionate story of enduring hope.
