Blurb: When Jaime takes to the sea, it’s not for money or for pleasure: it’s for revenge. Leaving his peaceful life on land behind is the only step he can take when his future is brutally destroyed and his heart is shattered.
Captain Gareth West is a feared pirate with a reputation for kidnapping and ransoming men and women. He’s also known for bedding them so well that no one has a reason to complain. However, a terrible incident has left him scarred and reluctant to become involved with anyone ever again…until one day he comes upon a shipwreck.
When Jaime’s ship is attacked by pirates and he is left for dead, Gareth sees an opportunity to banish the ghosts from his head. He decides to take the young man on board and use him as the prostitute that Jaime pretends to be. But Gareth quickly determines that his attractive captive is not a whore despite his apparent eagerness. Though he responds to Gareth as no lover ever has, there’s a fire in him that worries Gareth. Jaime is a dangerous mystery, and Gareth knows it’s essential that he learn his secret.
But he’s caught off guard when Jaime’s secret turns out to be the very nightmare that Gareth is running from.
“The only guest I’m currently entertaining is you,” Gareth said lightly, “and that is how I want it.” A beat. “Are you a fisherman? A deckhand?”
Jaime began to wander around the deck, his courage evidently growing. Gareth watched him with interest, noting what caught Jaime’s attention: a coil of rope, a mop and bucket left by a crewman. No interest in the rest of the crew, who Gareth could sense watching them from their various positions around the fore deck.
“I fish for conch,” Jaime said. “Pearls. Lobster when I can find them.”
“You’re an excellent swimmer, then.”
“I’ve a body well-honed by it,” Jaime murmured, and there was no mistaking the seductive look he aimed at Gareth.
Breeches growing intolerably tight even if they were his correct size, Gareth pushed off the railing. “I’ve an interest in seeing that for myself.”
Jaime braced his feet, though the ship hadn’t moved significantly. Gareth would have read it as a man bracing for a fight, except Jaime’s face continued to hold that seductive beckoning. Being unable to clearly read him was both frustrating and tantalizing. Gareth didn’t know what to expect next from him.
He reached Jaime and ran a finger down a bronzed cheek. Jaime’s breath stuttered, but he didn’t pull away from Gareth’s touch.
“It’s time I showed you where you’ll be bunking until we reach port,” Gareth said in a low burr. He cupped Jaime’s chin. “And it’s time you earned your keep, cabin boy.”
Another flash of fire in those soft green eyes. “Aye, Cap’n. Fair’s fair.”
Gareth studied him, bemused once again. “You’ve a bit of a spark in you, haven’t you?”
Immediately Jaime’s lashes fell demurely, coquettishly. “A spark that appeals to you, I hope.”
Yes, Gareth wanted to say at once, but he held his tongue. His instincts were sending him mixed signals. Was he projecting his own uncertainty onto Jaime?
Why the hell are you uncertain? You know this game. You’re the master of it.
Annoyed with himself, he slid his hand around to the back of Jaime’s neck and lightly squeezed, exerting dominance. “You’ll give me more of that spark down below. Let’s go, sweet.”
